Hello and welcome to Aspiring Acorns.
It's been lovely to meet our new children starting school for the first time.
The children had a fantastic start in nursery class this week. Everyone enjoyed exploring their new classroom, the children had ago with lots of activities and shared the resources with their new friends. We had a great time outdoors playing with the water and in the mud kitchen. We also had a visit from Ragdoll Annas...and we had a brilliant time with lots of music and props.
We look forward to seeing you all next week. :-)
All Aspiring Acorns had a lovely week last week and hope your ready for another week.
The children had a fantastic start in nursery class this week. Everyone enjoyed exploring their new classroom with lots of activities and playing with new friends. We had a great time outdoors playing with the water and in the mud kitchen.
We have been painting our lolly sticks to use in the our feeling zones, and also been leaning how to operate the iPad – screen, buttons, home button, camera. The children have explored turning the screen on/off, swiping, tapping icons (with adult support). We talked about holding the iPad carefully, not pressing too hard.
We can’t wait to continue building new relationships and learning new routines and expectations. It will be a marvellous year in Aspiring Acorn Class.
This week, Acorns class have been enjoying the story ‘Rosie’s Walk’ by Pat Hutchins.
They have been learning about positional language such as "over," "under," "around," and "through" by following Rosie's journey around the farm. Through fun, hands-on activities, they’ve also been developing their sequencing skills by retelling the story in order. The children enjoyed acting out the story, and talking about the different animals and helping to build both their vocabulary and understanding of storytelling.
Acorn Nursery Class – Forest School Fun
In Forest School, the children have been developing their confidence and independence while exploring the natural environment. They’ve been learning how to stay safe outdoors, working together, and using natural materials for create soup in the mud kitchen. The sessions have supported their physical development, encouraged curiosity, and helped them build a deeper connection with the world around them.
This week we had a busy week in nursery, we had a wonderful time exploring the European Day of Languages! The children were full of curiosity as we learnt 'Frere Jacques - nursery rhyme in French— we enjoyed singing to our friends. We used songs and dressed in the colours of the European country of our choices. This introduced different languages in a fun and a playful way.
Aspiring Acorns also enjoyed making flags and learnt the different European country names. It was heart warming to see their excitement as they began to understand that people around the world speak in many different ways. A lovely start to building early cultural awareness!
Autumn 1 Curriculum overview information
This week in nursery, we shared the beautiful story of The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, and the children were completely captivated. They listened intently as we read about the sparkly fish who learned the joy of sharing and friendship. After the story, we talked about how being kind and generous makes us feel happy inside, just like the Rainbow Fish.
The children then created their own colourful fish using paint and shiny foil scales — each one unique and full of personality! It was a lovely way to explore the values of kindness and community through storytelling and creativity.
This week, our children dove into the magical underwater world of The Rainbow Fish — a beautiful story about friendship, kindness, and sharing. The shimmering silver scales of the Rainbow Fish!...really caught their attention.
During circle time, we talked about where else we might see silver — around us? The children loved spotting silver objects around the room and showing them to their friends.
Through storytelling, art, and play, the colour silver has come to life in such a magical way. Just like the Rainbow Fish, Acorn class are discovering the joy of sharing and the beauty in every colour — especially the shiny ones!
Working together, the children gathered all sorts of shiny silver items from around the nursery. They were so excited to find bowls, ribbon, potato masher, helmet, baking foil, shoes, silver bag, and even a sieve! During circle time, we laid out all our treasures and had a lovely discussion about them.
We talked about the different shapes of each item — round, square, crinkly, and smooth — and how they felt to touch. The foil was soft and crinkly, the sieve was bumpy and cool, and the wrapping paper was smooth and shiny. The children were full of curiosity and great ideas as they explored these new textures and materials.
It was a wonderful way to build language skills, encourage teamwork, and develop early shape and sensory awareness — all while learning about the colour silver in a fun and hands-on way!
This week in our classroom, we read The Rainbow Fish together—and the children were immediately captivated by the glittering scales and underwater friends. As we read, we paused to explore words like shiny, lonely, scales, share, and wise. We talked about what these words meant, acted them out, and even drew pictures to match!
One of the favourite activity was our "repeating the phrases" from our story to go onto the wall, where each child repeated the words the characters used in the book. By the end of the week, our classroom was swimming with vocabulary! Using these words helps children connect language with emotion and imagination. They’re not just memorizing words—they’re feeling them, using them, and making them their own.
Aspiring Acorns also explored their learning outside with a crisp, refreshing autumn walk! Autumn gives us so many wonderful sights, sounds, smells and textures to discover. As we walked through the woody part of the school, the children were full of curiosity—crunching leaves underfoot, spotting sticks, gathering acorns, and watching the wind swirl golden leaves through the air. We talked about why leaves change colour, what animals do to get ready for winter, and how the air feels cooler now than in summer.
Along the way, we gathered treasures like pinecones, colourful leaves, and smooth stones. Back in the classroom, we used these to create autumn-inspired art and to build our autumn vocabulary with words like rustling, brown, orange, yellow and crisp.
Nature walks like these help children connect learning with the world around them. They ask questions, notice patterns, and use all their senses—exactly what growing minds need!
